NEPAL

Flooding and Landslides

Status:
19 Districts throughout the country were submerged by rising flood waters causinginfrastructureto be washed away and increasing the potential of a cholera outbreak.

31 year old Sher Bahadur Sharki noted that there was very little left of his village. During the flooding, many people climbed trees and stayed there for over 24 hours before they were rescued. Traumatized families are now sleeping in a school. ShelterBox is working to help his and other families who have lost everything.

Status:

The UN has declared a Level 3 Emergency in Iraq after militant advances have caused 1.2 million people to be displaced from their homes.

 

ShelterBox currently has prepositioned stock in Iraq and will be working with UNHCR and ACTED to move 500 UN specification tents to Duhok, near the border with Syria to shelter displaced Iraqis. As a precaution ShelterBox is also preparing winterization kits to be distributed before falling temperatures add to the worries of displaced families should there still be a need for tents in the winter months. PHILIPPINES

Typhoon

 

Status:

ShelterBox still had a team in country working with beneficiaries from Typhoon Haiyan when Typhoon Rammasun swept through the North of the country leaving 94 people dead, more than 300 injured, and tens of thousands homeless.

 

The Response Team met a family who had taken refuge in a bus shelter.All eight members, including six children ranging from two months old to 11 years of age, were living in the bus shelter that measured no more than two metres by three metres.They now have a warm, dry, and secure place to live.
