UPDATE, 2026-02-09: Jake has passed 350KM!  And he's still going…

January 23, 2026: Skating with purpose, Jake Maarse is taking on a 200-kilometre skating challenge this winter to raise funds for the RCWO Charitable Foundation — and inviting others to join him on the ice.

When it comes to Service Above Self, sometimes it starts with lacing up a pair of skates.

Rotary Club of West Ottawa member Jake Maarse is taking on a personal skating challenge this winter in support of the RCWO Charitable Foundation. Jake has committed to skating 200 kilometres, raising funds to support the Foundation’s charitable work in our community.

The challenge is being completed in 20-kilometre segments, with skates taking place wherever winter conditions allow. To date, Jake has already logged 45 kilometres.

In true Rotary spirit, this is not a solo effort. Fellow Rotarians, friends, and community members are warmly invited to join Jake on the ice for any portion of the remaining distance. Upcoming skates may take place at the Rideau Canal Skateway or at Brewer Park Oval, next to the Rotary Centennial Playground for All Abilities, weather and ice conditions permitting. The final skating day will be by the end of February.

So far, $650 has been raised, and momentum is building.
